Toju Foyeh

Toluwaloju Olowofoyeku (Toju Foyeh) developed a keen interest in fashion from a young age. Growing up, she was surrounded by several family members who were involved somewhow in the fashion/dressmaking industry including her parents who started a clothing line as a young couple. In addition, her Great Grandmother (Mrs Juliana Oyindamola Adenuga) was a designer who attended the London College of Fashion in the mid 50's

In pursuit of her formal education as a personal priority, she obtained an LLB (Bachelors of Law) from the University of Reading, United Kingdom 2008, and an LLM (Masters of Law) from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom 2009. She then decided that the time was right to follow her passion by enrolling for the Fashion Design degree program at the world famous InstitutoMarangoni in Milan, Italy. Upon completion in 2010 she returned to Nigeria and enrolled in the Nigerian Law School before finally launching her clothing line after graduating in 2012.

As her brand grew, she was invited to participate in the Arise Magazine Fashion Week Lagos 2011 and 2012, New York Fashion Week 2012 and was subsequently noticed as a designer to watch after being awarded the ‘Future Awards Africa Fashion Designer of the Year’ in 2012. With hard work and perseverance the Toju Foyeh brand became a favourite amongst celebrities in Nigeria (Tiwa Savage, AgbaniDarego, Betty Irabor, Osas Ajibade to name a few).

The brand launched its bridal line ‘Jemima by Toju Foyeh’ at the Heineken Lagos Fashion Design Week 2015. In time, when asked on the red carpet or elsewhere whose clothing they were wearing, her clients would cheekily respond ‘TF of course!’ and thus the slogan was coined.

In 2016 Toju Foyeh decided to explore and further challenge herself by partnering with South African style icon Bonang Matheba. This partnership was a success as it birthed a creative collection which propelled the young designer into the South African Market. Further collaborations with public figures such as NomzamoMbatha, the First Lady of South Africa Her Excellency Bongi Ngema-Zuma etcetera soon followed.

Having been motivated by her regular visits to her alma mater (Grange International) Toju realised a growing desire within her to influence and inspire the youth, especially young female aspiring designers. She thus begun spending more time and resources investing in future designers by organising training programmes and giving inspirational talks at various institutions.

In the spirit of Christmas, and in honour of her late grandmother (Mrs Esther Olusola Osunsade) she launched the first of many free classes in December 2017, the first of which was attended by approximately 150 students. The students were taught the basics of fashion design and were also given an opportunity to ask in depth questions about the business of fashion. At the class she challenged the students to a ‘Mannequin Drape Challenge’ and the winner was awarded a sewing machine, to encourage continuing education and practice.

Toju’s increased passion and drive to inspire and empower the youth and upcoming designers has motivated her to start her own fashion academy which will be launched within the next few years. In addition to world class teaching, the academy will offer scholarships as well as stipends for underprivileged students. In so doing the Academy will play its part in nurturing and developing Nigeria’s future crop of aspiring and cutting edge designers. The future is indeed looking exciting for the Toju Foyeh brand!
